Product Description

UHMWPE Fender Facing Sheet for Marine Fender Panels

UHMWPE Fender Facing Sheet is a heavy-duty engineering plastic facing plate designed for steel marine fender panels, dock protection structures, quay walls, rubbing strips and other vessel-contact applications. It is manufactured from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene and combines low friction, excellent wear resistance, high impact strength and very low water absorption.

In a marine fender system, the rubber fender unit absorbs berthing energy, while the steel front panel distributes the vessel load over a larger contact area. UHMWPE Fender Facing Sheet is installed on the front surface of the steel panel to create a durable and low-friction contact layer between the vessel hull and the fender system.

During berthing, loading, unloading, tidal movement and wave action, the vessel may move vertically or horizontally against the fender panel. The smooth UHMWPE surface helps reduce sliding resistance and protects the steel structure from direct contact, abrasive wear and repeated hull impact.

The sheet can be supplied as a complete molded panel, an individual replaceable facing pad, a long rubbing strip or a finished CNC-machined component. Sheet thickness, dimensions, color, mounting-hole layout and edge structure can be manufactured according to customer drawings.

General information about the base material is available in the
Wikipedia explanation of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene.
Additional information about marine fenders is available in the
Wikipedia explanation of boating and marine fenders.

What Is UHMWPE Fender Facing Sheet?

UHMWPE Fender Facing Sheet is a molded polyethylene plate used as the replaceable vessel-contact surface on a marine fender panel. UHMWPE contains extremely long molecular chains that contribute to high toughness, abrasion resistance and resistance to repeated sliding contact.

Compared with an uncovered steel panel, the UHMWPE surface provides lower friction and does not rust. Compared with conventional timber facing, UHMWPE does not contain wood grain and will not splinter, rot or absorb water in the same way as timber.

For coastal and outdoor applications, the material can be produced with UV stabilizers, antioxidants, weather-resistant pigments and other project-specified additives. These additives help delay degradation caused by sunlight, oxygen, saltwater spray and changing temperatures.

The product shown is yellow, providing high visibility and allowing the replaceable pads to be easily distinguished from the steel backing panel. Black, natural white, grey, blue, green, red and other colors can also be evaluated.

How Does UHMWPE Fender Facing Sheet Work?

Low-Friction Vessel Contact

The vessel hull can slide against the fender panel because of tides, waves, loading conditions and vessel movement. A low-friction UHMWPE surface helps reduce resistance between the hull and the steel fender panel.

Reduced friction can help limit excessive shear forces acting on the fender system and provide smoother relative movement between the vessel and the facing panel. Actual friction performance depends on the material grade, surface condition, contact pressure and wet or dry operating conditions.

Protection for the Steel Fender Panel

UHMWPE Fender Facing Sheet creates a replaceable wear layer in front of the steel panel. The plastic surface protects the steel structure from direct hull contact, abrasive movement and repeated impact.

When a facing pad reaches its maintenance limit, the individual pad can normally be replaced without replacing the complete steel fender panel. This can simplify maintenance and reduce long-term repair requirements.

High Impact Resistance

Marine fender systems experience repeated compression, vibration and vessel contact. UHMWPE provides good toughness and impact resistance, making it suitable for demanding vessel-contact surfaces.

The facing sheet does not replace the energy-absorbing rubber fender element. Its primary functions are to provide a durable contact surface, reduce friction and protect the steel front panel.

Wear and Abrasion Resistance

Repeated hull movement, sediment, ropes, surface contamination and marine debris can gradually wear the contact surface. UHMWPE Fender Facing Sheet provides resistance to repeated sliding and abrasive contact.

The actual service life depends on berthing frequency, vessel size, hull condition, contact pressure, material thickness, surface contamination, installation quality and maintenance frequency.

Low Water Absorption

UHMWPE absorbs very little water compared with many conventional engineering plastics. This helps it maintain stable performance in humid environments, splash zones and applications involving repeated saltwater exposure.

The UHMWPE material itself does not rust. However, the steel panel, fasteners, washers, inserts and supporting frames still require corrosion protection suitable for the actual marine environment.

Final dimensions should be confirmed according to mold capacity, material grade, machining allowance, required flatness and transportation conditions.

Available Thickness Options

10–30 mm Facing Sheets

Relatively thin sheets can be used for light-duty rubbing strips, protective surfaces and applications with continuous steel backing support.

30–100 mm Fender Facing Pads

This thickness range is commonly used for marine fender panels, dock protection plates and replaceable vessel-contact pads.

100–150 mm Heavy-Duty Facing Plates

Thicker plates provide greater wear allowance and impact resistance for demanding berths and large steel fender panels.

150–350 mm Extra-Thick Components

Extra-thick UHMWPE Fender Facing Sheet or molded blocks can be evaluated for specialized marine protection components, heavy-duty rubbing strips and deeply machined structures.

Extra-thick production requires an individual feasibility review because thickness affects molding time, cooling, internal stress, flatness, machining allowance and transportation weight.

Marine Grade and Material Formulation

Virgin UHMWPE Grade

Virgin UHMWPE is generally selected where consistent appearance, controlled material composition, high impact resistance and project-specified colors are required.

Yellow, white, blue, green, grey and red facing pads are commonly manufactured from virgin or specially colored formulations.

Wear-Resistant Grade

Wear-resistant formulations may be considered for high-frequency berths, rough vessel-contact conditions and applications requiring an extended replacement interval.

The final grade should be selected according to technical data, actual operating conditions and the project specification rather than color alone.

UV-Stabilized Marine Grade

Outdoor marine fender panels are continuously exposed to sunlight, oxygen, rain, salt spray and temperature changes. UV-stabilized material can help delay fading, surface chalking, brittleness and loss of mechanical properties.

General information about additives used to delay polymer degradation is available in the
Wikipedia explanation of polymer stabilizers.

UV stabilization slows the aging process but does not guarantee unlimited outdoor service life. Projects requiring a specified weathering period should define the test method and acceptable performance changes.

UHMWPE and HDPE Fender Facing Materials

UHMWPE and HDPE are both polyethylene materials, but they do not provide identical mechanical and sliding properties.

UHMWPE is generally preferred for demanding marine fender-facing applications because it provides higher impact resistance, lower friction and better sliding-wear performance than standard HDPE.

HDPE may be considered for less demanding protective panels, backing components or projects with different performance and budget requirements. The two materials should not be presented as directly interchangeable without reviewing the project load and operating conditions.

Custom Mounting Holes and Edge Structures

UHMWPE Fender Facing Sheet can be machined according to the steel fender-panel drawing. Available structures include:

  • Through mounting holes
  • Countersunk bolt holes
  • Counterbored installation holes
  • Recessed bolt-head and washer positions
  • Elongated expansion holes
  • Chamfered panel edges
  • Rounded outside corners
  • Positioning grooves
  • Stepped edges
  • Curved outside profiles
  • Individual replaceable facing pads
  • Long rubbing and belting strips

Mounting-hole positions must match the steel backing-panel structure. Hole diameter and installation clearance should also allow for the thermal expansion of UHMWPE.

Custom CNC Machining

UHMWPE Fender Facing Sheet can be supplied as a complete molded panel or processed into finished facing pads according to customer drawings.

A typical manufacturing process may include:

  • Raw-material preparation
  • Compression molding
  • Controlled cooling
  • Blank stabilization
  • Surface planing
  • Cut-to-size processing
  • Outside-profile machining
  • Hole and recess machining
  • Edge chamfering
  • Precision finishing
  • Dimensional inspection

Large or thick facing pads may require staged rough and finish machining to control internal stress, cutting heat and dimensional variation.

Critical dimensions, hole positions, countersink dimensions, reference surfaces and tolerances should be clearly marked on the drawing.

Installation Recommendations

UHMWPE facing pads are normally fixed to a steel fender panel using bolts, washers and recessed mounting structures. The final fastening design should be confirmed by the marine fender-system designer.

UHMWPE expands and contracts more than steel when the temperature changes. Installation holes should therefore provide suitable movement allowance. Elongated holes, recessed washers or floating fastening structures may be required.

Bolts should not be excessively tightened because concentrated pressure can deform the material around the mounting hole. The rear surface of each pad should be supported evenly by the steel panel.

Fasteners, inserts, backing plates and steel frames should use a corrosion-protection system appropriate for the local saltwater, atmospheric and temperature conditions.
