What Is UV-Resistant PE1000 UHMWPE Block, Sheet and Plate?

UV-Resistant PE1000 UHMWPE Block, Sheet and Plate is a solid polyethylene product containing a project-specified light-stabilizing formulation. The extremely long molecular chains of UHMWPE contribute to toughness, impact resistance and resistance to repeated sliding and abrasive contact.

The PE1000 designation is commonly used for PE-UHMW or UHMWPE engineering plastic materials. The final resin grade, molecular-weight range, density, stabilizer package, pigmentation and mechanical properties should be confirmed through the corresponding technical specification or inspection documents.

Standard UHMWPE may gradually experience fading, surface oxidation, chalking or reduced mechanical performance after prolonged exposure to sunlight. A UV-resistant formulation uses selected stabilizers, antioxidants and weather-resistant pigments to delay these changes.

Natural-white, black or colored appearance alone does not prove that the material is UV resistant. The stabilizer system, pigment formulation, required outdoor conditions and applicable weathering test should be specified before production.

Available Product Forms

UV-Resistant PE1000 UHMWPE Block

UHMWPE blocks are solid machining blanks suitable for wear pads, guide blocks, impact components, equipment supports, machine stops, spacers and deeply machined industrial parts.

The thick structure provides sufficient material for deep grooves, blind holes, stepped surfaces, recessed structures and complex three-dimensional profiles.

UV-Resistant PE1000 UHMWPE Sheet

UHMWPE sheets are suitable for outdoor machinery panels, replaceable liners, conveyor guides, wear strips, sliding surfaces and protective equipment components.

Standard and large-format sheets can be supplied as complete molded panels or cut-to-size pieces according to the installation dimensions.

UV-Resistant PE1000 UHMWPE Plate

Medium and thick UHMWPE plates provide additional wear allowance, impact resistance and machining depth. They can be processed into support pads, buffer plates, positioning components and heavy-duty machinery parts.

Long Strips and Profiled Blanks

Long UHMWPE strips and profiles can be manufactured for chain guides, conveyor rails, wear strips, marine components and equipment-protection structures.

How Does the UV-Stabilizing Formulation Work?

Ultraviolet-Energy Management

Selected UV absorbers can absorb part of the ultraviolet energy reaching the polymer and release it in a less damaging form. This helps reduce the rate at which sunlight initiates degradation within the material.

Light Stabilization

Light stabilizers can help interrupt degradation reactions caused by ultraviolet radiation and oxygen. The final stabilizer package depends on the resin formulation, product color, sunlight intensity, operating temperature and required service conditions.

Antioxidant Protection

Antioxidants may be incorporated into the formulation to help reduce oxidative degradation caused by heat, oxygen and outdoor exposure.

Weather-Resistant Pigments

The pigment system influences color stability and long-term surface appearance. A UV-resistant UHMWPE material should use pigments suitable for the specified outdoor environment rather than relying only on the visible color of the finished product.

General information about sunlight-related polymer degradation is available in the
Wikipedia explanation of polymer photo-oxidation.

UV Resistance Does Not Mean Permanent Outdoor Protection

UV stabilization helps delay degradation but does not make UHMWPE permanently unaffected by sunlight. Outdoor performance varies according to climate, geographical location, installation direction, temperature, humidity, chemical exposure and solar-radiation intensity.

The expected outdoor service period should not be determined from the words “UV resistant” alone. Projects requiring a defined weathering life should specify the applicable test method, exposure period and acceptable changes in color, surface appearance and mechanical performance.

Actual service life also depends on component thickness, remaining wall thickness after machining, applied load, impact frequency, fastener design and maintenance conditions.

Main Advantages of UV-Resistant PE1000 UHMWPE Block, Sheet and Plate

Improved Outdoor Weathering Performance

The selected stabilizer formulation helps delay fading, surface oxidation, chalking and deterioration caused by sunlight and oxygen.

This makes the material suitable for outdoor guides, exposed liners, marine components, protective plates, machinery supports and weather-exposed wear parts.

Excellent Wear Resistance

UV-Resistant PE1000 UHMWPE Block, Sheet and Plate is suitable for components exposed to repeated rubbing, sliding and abrasive contact.

It can be used with chains, belts, packages, bottles, powders, grains, minerals and metal mating surfaces. Actual service life depends on abrasive hardness, particle shape, contact pressure, sliding speed and operating temperature.

High Impact Strength

The UHMWPE structure provides high toughness and helps the material withstand repeated mechanical impact without easily cracking under appropriate operating conditions.

This makes it suitable for impact pads, equipment stops, buffer blocks, loading points and protective components exposed to vibration or falling materials.

Low-Friction Working Surface

The smooth surface helps reduce sliding resistance between moving components and the UHMWPE material. Lower friction can support smoother movement and reduce direct metal contact, operating drag and mating-surface wear.

This property is useful for sliding blocks, chain guides, conveyor rails, wear pads, support plates and equipment liners.

Self-Lubricating Performance

Many UHMWPE sliding components can operate without continuous oil or grease lubrication. This can simplify routine maintenance and reduce lubricant contamination around conveyed products.

Whether additional lubrication is required depends on load, sliding speed, mating material, operating temperature and equipment design.

Low Water Absorption

UHMWPE absorbs very little moisture compared with many conventional engineering plastics. This supports stable performance in humid environments, outdoor installations and periodically washed equipment.

Chemical and Corrosion Resistance

UV-Resistant PE1000 UHMWPE Block, Sheet and Plate does not rust and resists many commonly encountered acids, alkalis, salts and industrial chemicals.

Chemical compatibility should be evaluated separately when the material will contact strong oxidizing agents, specialized solvents, concentrated chemicals or elevated-temperature process media.

Noise and Vibration Reduction

Installing UHMWPE between moving products and metal structures can help reduce direct metal contact, equipment vibration and operating noise.

Convenient CNC Machining

The material can be cut, planed, drilled, turned, milled, grooved and CNC-machined. Thick blocks and plates provide sufficient machining allowance for deep holes, recessed surfaces, stepped structures and complex profiles.

The listed dimensions are common manufacturing options rather than guaranteed combinations. Maximum length, width and thickness cannot always be manufactured together in one block, sheet or plate.

Final dimensions should be confirmed according to mold capacity, material formulation, thickness, required flatness, machining allowance and transportation conditions. Precision dimensions should normally be achieved through planing and CNC machining rather than assumed from the as-molded blank.

Available Thickness Options

6–20 mm UHMWPE Sheets

Relatively thin sheets are suitable for protective surfaces, replaceable wear layers, conveyor strips and lightweight equipment liners. Thin sheets normally require continuous or closely spaced support.

20–50 mm Industrial Sheets and Plates

This thickness range is commonly used for guide rails, sliding plates, wear pads, protective panels and outdoor machinery components.

50–100 mm Thick Plates and Blocks

Medium-thickness material provides additional impact resistance and machining allowance for grooves, steps, holes and recessed structures.

100–200 mm Heavy-Duty Blocks and Plates

Thick material can be processed into impact pads, large supports, positioning components and deeply machined industrial parts.

200–350 mm Extra-Thick Blocks

Extra-thick UHMWPE blocks can be evaluated for large equipment supports, heavy-duty buffer pads and components requiring deep three-dimensional machining.

Production feasibility depends on the overall dimensions, mold capacity, cooling time, internal stress, machining allowance and dimensional-tolerance requirements.

Color and UV-Stabilized Formulations

Natural-White UV-Resistant UHMWPE

Natural-white or light-colored UHMWPE can be produced with a selected light-stabilizing system. Its appearance alone does not confirm the stabilizer content or outdoor performance.

Black UV-Resistant UHMWPE

Black formulations can be selected for outdoor machinery, marine equipment and industrial components requiring a dark appearance.

Colored UV-Resistant UHMWPE

Blue, green, yellow, red and grey materials can be evaluated with weather-resistant pigments and project-specified stabilizers.

Where strict color matching is required, the final shade should be approved using a physical sample, Pantone reference or another agreed color standard.

UV-Resistant and Other Modified Grades

UV resistance and electrical performance are separate material functions. A UV-resistant UHMWPE product is not automatically antistatic or conductive.

Project-specific formulations may include:

  • UV-stabilized UHMWPE
  • Enhanced wear-resistant UHMWPE
  • Antistatic UHMWPE
  • Conductive UHMWPE
  • Oil-filled or self-lubricating UHMWPE
  • Flame-retardant UHMWPE
  • Dual-color UHMWPE
  • Project-specified modified UHMWPE

Each functional grade should be confirmed through the selected material formulation, testing method and required inspection documentation.

Custom Cutting and CNC Machining

UV-Resistant PE1000 UHMWPE Block, Sheet and Plate can be supplied as a rough blank, cut-to-size panel or finished CNC-machined component.

Available processing services include:

  • Rectangular block and panel cutting
  • Long strip and profile cutting

Machining and Dimensional Considerations

UHMWPE expands and contracts more than most metals when temperature changes. Finished component dimensions can vary when the operating temperature differs significantly from the inspection temperature.

Large or extra-thick blanks may require material stabilization, surface planing, rough machining, stress release and precision finishing.

Removing large amounts of material in several machining stages can help control cutting heat, internal stress and dimensional variation.

Critical dimensions, reference surfaces, hole positions and tolerances should be clearly marked on the drawing. Final tolerances should be appropriate for the component size, thickness and expected operating-temperature range.

Outdoor Installation Recommendations

UHMWPE blocks, sheets and plates should be supported evenly and installed with suitable thermal-expansion clearance.

Elongated holes, floating fasteners or sliding fixing structures may be considered where significant temperature changes are expected.

Fasteners should not be excessively tightened because concentrated pressure can cause local deformation around mounting holes.

Installation structures should prevent abrasive materials, dust or standing water from becoming trapped behind the UHMWPE component where this could damage the supporting frame.
