Product Description

UHMWPE Plastic Sheet with Custom Antistatic Properties

UHMWPE Plastic Sheet is a high-performance engineering plastic panel manufactured from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. This product uses a modified material formulation to combine the wear resistance, impact strength and low-friction performance of UHMWPE with project-specified antistatic, static-dissipative or conductive properties.

Standard UHMWPE is normally an electrical insulator. During conveying, sliding, rubbing, separation or repeated contact with films, powders, chains, belts and machinery components, static electrical charge may accumulate on the plastic surface. A suitable antistatic modification system helps reduce this accumulation and can provide a controlled path for charge dissipation.

The product can be supplied as a complete molded sheet, cut-to-size plate, wear strip, conveyor guide, fixture panel, sliding block or finished CNC-machined component. Mounting holes, countersinks, counterbores, elongated slots, guide grooves, recessed structures, stepped surfaces and irregular outside profiles can be manufactured according to customer drawings.

What Is UHMWPE Plastic Sheet?

UHMWPE Plastic Sheet is a solid thermoplastic engineering panel made from polyethylene resin with an extremely high molecular weight. The material is also commonly identified as PE-UHMW, PE1000 or UPE in the engineering-plastics industry.

Its extremely long molecular chains contribute to high toughness, resistance to mechanical impact and resistance to repeated sliding and abrasive wear. Compared with conventional polyethylene sheets, UHMWPE Plastic Sheet is generally selected for more demanding machinery, conveying and material-handling applications.

The sheet can be installed directly as a replaceable wear surface or processed into finished industrial components. It can be divided into strips, guide rails, liner plates, wear blocks, fixture panels, support pads and CNC-machined parts.

For this product, an antistatic or conductive modification system is incorporated into the UHMWPE formulation. The electrical behavior depends on the additive system, filler type, concentration, color, production process and testing conditions.

Material color alone does not confirm whether a UHMWPE Plastic Sheet is insulating, antistatic, static-dissipative or conductive. The material grade and electrical test results must be used to verify its performance.

Antistatic, Static-Dissipative and Conductive Grades

Antistatic UHMWPE Plastic Sheet

An antistatic grade is designed to reduce the tendency of static electricity to accumulate on the plastic surface. It may be selected for conveyor systems, packaging equipment, powder-handling machinery and production components where dust attraction, product sticking or minor static shocks need to be reduced.

Static-Dissipative UHMWPE Plastic Sheet

A static-dissipative grade provides a more controlled pathway for electrical charge to move through or across the material.

This grade may be considered for electronic-production fixtures, battery-manufacturing equipment, automation components, inspection tooling and machinery operating near electrostatic-sensitive products.

Conductive UHMWPE Plastic Sheet

A conductive grade generally has lower electrical resistance than antistatic or static-dissipative UHMWPE and allows accumulated charge to move more readily.

Where charge must be transferred to earth, the conductive component must be connected to a correctly designed grounding system. A conductive sheet installed against painted, insulated or contaminated equipment may not provide an effective grounding path.

Electrical Properties Must Be Confirmed

Antistatic, static-dissipative and conductive are not interchangeable descriptions. No fixed resistance value should be assumed from the product name, color or appearance.

The following electrical requirements should be confirmed before manufacturing:

  • Antistatic, static-dissipative or conductive classification
  • Required surface resistance or surface resistivity
  • Required volume resistance or volume resistivity
  • Applicable testing standard
  • Testing voltage
  • Electrode and contact method
  • Temperature and humidity conditioning
  • Required measuring positions
  • Electrical range after machining
  • Electrical range after cleaning or washing
  • Permitted batch variation
  • Required inspection report

Electrical measurements can be affected by humidity, temperature, surface contamination, machining marks, cleaning agents and test-equipment configuration. Final acceptance should therefore be based on an agreed testing procedure.

Main Advantages of UHMWPE Plastic Sheet

Reduced Static-Charge Accumulation

The modified formulation helps reduce static buildup caused by product movement, conveying, sliding contact and repeated separation from other surfaces.

This can help reduce dust attraction, product sticking, minor static shocks and uncontrolled charge accumulation around selected industrial processes.

Excellent Wear Resistance

UHMWPE Plastic Sheet is suitable for components exposed to continuous sliding, rubbing and abrasive contact.

It can be used with conveyor chains, belts, films, cartons, containers, powders, pellets, granules and moving machinery components.

Actual service life depends on applied load, sliding speed, contact pressure, abrasive contamination, mating-material hardness, operating temperature and installation quality.

High Impact Strength

The tough molecular structure helps the sheet withstand repeated mechanical impact and vibration without easily cracking under suitable operating conditions.

This characteristic is useful for equipment stops, buffer components, positioning blocks, protective plates, guide parts and machinery components exposed to intermittent impact.

Low-Friction Working Surface

The smooth UHMWPE surface helps reduce resistance between products and equipment components. Lower friction can support smoother movement and help reduce dragging, sticking, scratching and direct contact with rough metal surfaces.

This property is useful for conveyor guides, chain rails, sliding plates, wear strips, fixture surfaces and product-transfer components.

Self-Lubricating Performance

Many components manufactured from UHMWPE Plastic Sheet can operate without continuous external oil or grease lubrication.

This can simplify maintenance and reduce the accumulation of lubricant, dust and abrasive particles around the working area. Whether additional lubrication is required depends on applied load, sliding speed, contact pressure, mating material and operating temperature.

Very Low Water Absorption

UHMWPE absorbs very little moisture compared with many conventional engineering plastics. Routine humidity, occasional washing and water exposure do not normally cause significant material swelling.

This supports use in humid workshops, packaging areas, beverage equipment and periodically cleaned industrial systems.

Chemical and Corrosion Resistance

UHMWPE Plastic Sheet does not rust and resists many commonly encountered acids, alkalis, salts and industrial chemicals.

Chemical compatibility should be evaluated separately when the material will contact strong oxidizing agents, specialized solvents, concentrated chemicals or elevated-temperature process media.

Reduced Noise and Vibration

Installing UHMWPE between moving products and metal structures can help reduce direct metal-contact noise, equipment vibration and mechanical shock.

Replaceable Wear Component

The plastic sheet can function as a replaceable working surface. When the component reaches its maintenance limit, it can be removed while the main steel equipment remains in service.

This can help protect more expensive equipment frames, guide rails and supporting structures from direct wear.

Flexible CNC Machining

UHMWPE Plastic Sheet can be saw-cut, planed, drilled, turned, milled, grooved and CNC-machined.

It can be processed into tooling plates, guide blocks, wear pads, positioning fixtures, conveyor components and complex equipment-specific parts.

General information about computer-controlled machining is available in the
Wikipedia explanation of numerical control.

The dimensions listed above are common manufacturing options rather than guaranteed combinations. Maximum length, width, thickness, flatness and electrical-property uniformity cannot always be achieved together in one product.

Modified antistatic formulations may require different molding, cooling and machining conditions from standard UHMWPE. Final specifications should be confirmed according to the electrical grade, sheet dimensions, thickness, machining requirements and transportation conditions.

Available UHMWPE Plastic Sheet Thicknesses

6–20 mm UHMWPE Plastic Sheet

Relatively thin sheets are suitable for equipment surfaces, lightweight guides, protective plates, electronic fixtures and continuously supported wear liners.

Thin sheets normally require continuous or closely spaced structural support.

20–50 mm Industrial Antistatic Panels

This thickness range is commonly selected for conveyor guides, tooling plates, positioning fixtures, sliding panels and general machinery components.

50–100 mm Heavy-Duty Plates

Thicker panels provide additional impact resistance and machining allowance for mounting holes, grooves, steps, recesses and equipment-specific structures.

100–200 mm Thick Machining Plates

Thick material can be processed into fixture bodies, support blocks, guide components and deeply machined industrial parts.

200–300 mm Extra-Thick Blanks

Extra-thick antistatic blanks can be evaluated for large components requiring deep three-dimensional machining.

Overall blank dimensions may need to be reduced as thickness increases. Electrical-property uniformity should also be confirmed across the finished component.

Colors and Antistatic Formulations

Black is commonly used for conductive or carbon-modified UHMWPE Plastic Sheet. Blue, green, grey and other colors may be available when alternative antistatic modification systems are selected.

Color alone does not confirm an electrical-resistance range. Every material should be identified by its formulation code, production batch and electrical test results.

Where strict color matching is required, the customer should provide a physical sample, Pantone reference, RAL reference or another agreed color standard.

Antistatic additives and conductive fillers can affect density, hardness, impact performance, surface appearance, color and machining behavior. Material samples should be evaluated where the application has critical mechanical or electrical requirements.

Compression-Molding Production Process

UHMWPE Plastic Sheet is commonly manufactured using compression molding. The UHMWPE powder, pigment and antistatic or conductive additives are prepared according to the specified formulation.

The prepared material is placed into a mold and consolidated under controlled temperature and pressure. After pressing, the sheet is gradually cooled, removed from the mold, trimmed and stabilized before secondary machining.

General information about this manufacturing method is available in the
Wikipedia explanation of compression molding.

Material Preparation

The UHMWPE resin, pigment and selected static-control additives are prepared according to the required material grade.

Mold Filling

The material is evenly distributed inside the mold. Uniform filling supports consistent density, color, surface appearance and electrical performance.

Heating and Pressing

The material is consolidated under controlled temperature and pressure. The processing cycle depends on sheet dimensions, thickness, formulation and mold structure.

Controlled Cooling

The molded panel is cooled gradually. Controlled cooling helps reduce excessive internal stress, uneven shrinkage and panel warpage.

Stabilization and Inspection

After demolding, thick or large panels may require stabilization before surface planing, cutting and precision machining.

Machining and Electrical Testing

Machining can change the surface condition and expose material from different depths within the molded sheet. Where the finished component requires a specified resistance range, testing should be completed on the final machined and cleaned surface.

Cutting fluids, grease, cleaning agents, polishing compounds, dust and surface contamination may influence electrical measurements.

The inspection agreement should state whether the product is tested as molded, after planing, after final machining, after cleaning or after environmental conditioning.

UHMWPE expands and contracts more than most metals when temperature changes. Dimensional tolerances should therefore consider the finished component size, operating temperature and mounting method.

Installation and Grounding Recommendations

UHMWPE Plastic Sheet can be installed using countersunk bolts, recessed fasteners, mechanical clamps, backing plates, metal inserts or equipment-specific mounting structures.

If the application requires charge transfer to earth, the component must be connected to a reliable grounding path. Painted, oxidized, insulated or contaminated contact surfaces may interrupt electrical continuity.

Conductive fasteners, grounding straps or dedicated contact points may be required according to the equipment design.

Suitable thermal-expansion clearance should be provided around panel edges, mounting holes and joints.

Fasteners should not be excessively tightened because concentrated pressure can deform UHMWPE around the mounting position.

Quality Inspection

Quality inspection can be completed according to customer drawings and agreed technical requirements. Typical inspection items include:

  • UHMWPE material-grade confirmation
  • Antistatic formulation identification
  • Color and surface-appearance inspection
