Product Description

Natural PA6 Nylon Rod

Natural PA6 Nylon Rod is a solid engineering plastic round bar used for machining bushings, sleeves, rollers, gears, guide wheels, pulleys, spacers, support components and other industrial plastic parts. It combines good mechanical strength, wear resistance, impact toughness and machining performance.

The product is manufactured from PA6 polyamide material, also known as Nylon 6. Depending on the rod diameter, production process and raw-material batch, its natural color may appear ivory, cream white, milky white, semi-translucent or slightly yellowish. Natural color should not be interpreted as pure white, transparent or food-contact compliant without confirming the selected material grade.

Compared with many general-purpose plastics, PA6 provides a useful balance of rigidity, toughness and abrasion resistance. It is commonly selected for components exposed to repeated movement, rolling contact, moderate loads and mechanical vibration.

Complete Diameter List

Available reference diameters: Φ0.75, Φ1, Φ1.5, Φ2, Φ3, Φ4, Φ5, Φ6, Φ8, Φ10, Φ12, Φ15, Φ20, Φ25, Φ30, Φ35, Φ40, Φ45, Φ50, Φ55, Φ60, Φ65, Φ70, Φ75, Φ80, Φ85, Φ90, Φ95, Φ100, Φ110, Φ120, Φ130, Φ140, Φ150, Φ160, Φ170, Φ180, Φ190, Φ200, Φ220, Φ230, Φ250, Φ280 and Φ300 mm.

Reference length: 1000 mm.

Not every diameter is necessarily available from stock at all times. Diameter, actual outside tolerance, length, material grade, forming process, quantity and delivery schedule should be confirmed before ordering.

Very small diameters may be more flexible and may be supplied as small solid nylon rods or filament-type material rather than rigid machining bars. Large-diameter products may be manufactured through a different forming process from smaller extruded rods. The required material grade and production method should therefore be confirmed according to the final application.

Natural Color and Appearance

Natural PA6 does not always have one completely uniform color. Depending on diameter, wall thickness, lighting, moisture content, raw-material batch and production process, the rod may appear:

  • Ivory white
  • Cream white
  • Milky white
  • Semi-translucent
  • Slightly yellowish natural color

Thin rods may look more translucent than thick rods because light can pass through a smaller material section. Large-diameter rods normally appear more opaque. These normal appearance differences do not independently indicate a change in material grade.

Common Applications

Natural PA6 Nylon Rod can be supplied as raw round stock or machined into finished industrial components. Typical applications include:

  • Nylon bushings and bearing sleeves
  • Guide wheels and conveyor rollers
  • Nylon gears and sprockets
  • Pulleys and sheaves
  • Spacer rings and distance sleeves
  • Insulating rods and support columns
  • Guide pins and locating components
  • Wear-resistant shafts
  • Flanges and sealing support rings
  • Chain rollers and tensioning components
  • Machine handles and adjustment components
  • Textile-machine components
  • Packaging-machine components
  • Automation-equipment parts
  • Industrial maintenance replacement parts
  • Custom CNC-machined nylon components

Common Finished Parts by Diameter

Rod Diameter Typical Finished Components
Φ0.75–Φ12 mm Small pins, insulation rods, positioning rods and lightweight structural parts
Φ15–Φ50 mm Small sleeves, spacers, bushings, pins, guide rollers and locating components
Φ55–Φ100 mm Medium rollers, wheels, gears, pulleys, sleeves and mechanical support parts
Φ110–Φ200 mm Large rollers, thick bushings, flanges, pulleys, gears and bearing components
Φ220–Φ300 mm Large-diameter gears, rings, wheels, pulleys and heavy CNC-machined blanks

The rod diameter should be selected with sufficient machining allowance. A finished part with a diameter of 50 mm should not automatically be manufactured from a nominal 50 mm rod because the raw rod may have normal production tolerance, surface skin or straightness variation.

Machining Options

Natural PA6 Nylon Rod can be processed into both simple and complex components. Available machining operations include:

  • Cutting to the required blank length
  • CNC turning of outside diameters
  • Drilling and boring internal holes
  • Machining bushings and bearing sleeves
  • Milling flats, keyways and positioning surfaces
  • Cutting internal and external threads
  • Machining grooves and retaining-ring positions
  • Producing gears, rollers and pulleys
  • Chamfering and edge rounding
  • Machining stepped shafts and flanges
  • Producing curved and special-shaped surfaces
  • Batch production according to drawings or samples

For parts requiring accurate concentricity, hole tolerances, bearing fits or thread dimensions, the complete finished drawing should be provided rather than only the rod diameter.

Machining Allowance and Internal Stress

Machining allowance should be reserved when selecting the raw rod diameter. The required allowance depends on the finished component diameter, rod tolerance, straightness, concentricity and surface condition.

Large-diameter nylon rods may contain internal stress generated during forming and cooling. Removing too much material from only one side can release stress unevenly and cause bending or dimensional movement.

For precision components, a suitable process may include rough machining, symmetrical material removal, intermediate conditioning or stress-relief time, followed by final machining and inspection.

Moisture Absorption and Dimensional Changes

PA6 nylon is a moisture-absorbing engineering plastic. Moisture from the surrounding environment can affect the rod’s dimensions, stiffness, toughness and machining tolerances.

This characteristic should be considered when the finished part will be used in:

  • Humid workshops
  • Outdoor equipment
  • Water-contact applications
  • Wash-down machinery
  • Close-tolerance assemblies
  • Press-fit bushings and sleeves
  • Precision rollers and bearing components

For precision parts, the customer should provide the operating humidity, working temperature, mating dimensions and required tolerance. A nylon component should not automatically use the same interference fit or dimensional tolerance as an equivalent metal part.

Material Selection Notes

Standard natural PA6 should not automatically be described as food grade, anti-static, conductive, flame retardant, heat stabilized, oil filled or glass-fiber reinforced. These properties require a corresponding modified material grade and supporting documentation.

  • Food-contact use: Requires a confirmed food-contact PA6 grade and relevant compliance documentation.
  • Anti-static use: Requires a modified grade with confirmed surface-resistance or volume-resistance values.
  • Flame-retardant use: Requires tested flame-retardant material rather than standard natural PA6.
  • High-temperature use: Continuous temperature, load and exposure time must be evaluated together.
  • Outdoor use: UV exposure and weather resistance should be evaluated before selection.
  • High-precision wet environments: Moisture absorption and dimensional movement must be considered.
  • Aggressive chemicals: Chemical compatibility should be confirmed before use.

PA6 Nylon Rod and Metal Rod Comparison

Comparison Item Natural PA6 Nylon Rod Metal Rod
Weight Lightweight Generally heavier
Corrosion Does not rust Depends on metal grade and surface treatment
Noise Can reduce mechanical contact noise Metal-to-metal contact may produce more noise
Machining Easy to turn, mill and drill with suitable plastic-machining methods Requires metal-cutting tools and operating parameters
Rigidity Lower than steel Higher structural rigidity
Moisture Effect May absorb moisture and change dimensions Generally not affected in the same way
Electrical Properties Provides electrical insulation in suitable conditions Most common metals are electrically conductive

Nylon should not be treated as a universal metal replacement. Load, stiffness, temperature, creep, moisture, dimensional tolerance and operating speed must be evaluated before replacing a metal component.
